Going into Marathon Monday I was feeling really good. I had put in the miles, lost a ton of weight with solid Paleo nutrition, and had great Guides and a plan for success. An additional wind in my sails was knowing how many amazing people were supporting Vision42K and I knew what a difference we were all making.
What I didn't anticipate was the blistering heat that was soon to arrive in Boston. Between worried supporters and BAA emails and announcements to NOT race it was hard to stay focused.
I was either really excited or really nervous leading up to the marathon... never in between.
The night before the race Jenny's family put together an amazing pre-race dinner. I was only hoping it wasn't SO nice that it would be my last. Never the less it was really special to have the support and send-off. Earlier in the day I had run into Lisa Hughes, CBS-WBZ anchor here in Boston, who was leading the live coverage of the Marathon. I thought that was a great sign going into the race.
What I didn't expect, but tried to take in stride was that a HUGE cast iron pipe in my basement cracked that afternoon (the day before the marathon) and rather than resting with elevated feet I was scrambling to HomeDepot to mitigate the damage until I could get some expert plumbers in to really fix it. One thing I can say is that with all my other triathlons, CrossFit, runs, rides, etc. you just learn to take things as they come... the good the bad... whatever you can't control no need to dwell on. I stayed as focused as I could on what I needed for the race and knew I had prepared my mind and body as best I could so there was nothing else I could do.
So I made sure to pack up all my gear, check it a few times, go over my race plan, and be ready for my ride to the Athletes' Village in Hopkington in the a.m.
I had a 26 round battle in the morning so getting some solid sleep was my priority.
